The commissioner said that more grass cutting machines, diesel and other equipment would be provided to workers at the site to hasten the clearance.
He said that the clearing exercise was designed to ease flow of water, check flooding, enhance fishing and agricultural activities.
The commissioner, who attributed the perennial flooding to the blockage of water ways caused by the typher grass, added that several kilometres of the river had already been cleared of the grass.
``The grass clearing exercise has reduced the effects of the flood and enhanced effective utilisation of water resources by fishermen and farming communities,” he said.
Yakubu said that the state government was educating local communities on the need to desist from erecting structures and dumping of waste on water ways.
In his speech, the Chairman of the council, Alhaji Abdullahi Bulama commended the state government for the gesture, saying the effort would improve the socio-economic condition of the people.
Bulama appealed to the benefiting communities to cooperate with the workers to facilitate successful completion of the exercise. (NAN)
