Physician advises people to drink enough water for healthy skin

WORKSHOP ON GROUND WATER ABSTRACTION IN LAGOS
Dr. Daniel Onaiwu, an Abuja-based general practitioner, advised people to take adequate water to maintain healthy skin and hydration
.
Onaiwu told people in Abuja that drinking enough water could clear up one’s skin and reduce the risk of cancer of the colon.
``Of course, it won’t happen overnight, but just a week of drinking healthy amount of water can have good effect on your skin.''
He said hydration and good conditioning of the skin were some of the benefits derived from good intake of water.
``It is also a great appetite suppressant. Water has no fat, no calories, no carbohydrates and no sugar.''
He said water was used to quench thirst because dehydration can sap one’s energy and make one feel tired.
``Even mild dehydration of one per cent or two per cent of the body weight can make one get tired.
``This can lead to fatigue, muscle weakness, dizziness and other symptoms.''
Onaiwu said that being dehydrated could severely hamper athletic activities, slowing one down and making it harder to lift weights.
``Exercise requires additional water. So, those who engage in exercises should ensure they take water before, during and after.''
He said that drinking healthy amount of water reduced the risk of cancer of the colon by 45 per cent.
The physician said the practice also lessened the risk of cancer of the bladder by 50 per cent and the risk of breast cancer.
He said apart from reducing the risk of cancer of the colon, taking enough water could also benefit those who desired to lose weight.
He said water replaced high-caloric drinks like soda, juice and alcohol because it has no calories.
The medical doctor also said that drinking good amount of water could lower the risk of  heart attack.
He said  a six-year study published in the American Journal of Epidemiology in 2002 on water intake had shown that  those who drank more than five glasses of water a day were 41 per cent less likely to die from heart attack.''

Onaiwu said water also flushed out toxins and waste products from the body, cure of stomach acid problems and helped in the treatment of constipation.
